Andrew Jones (Trumpet/conductor)

Andrew has been a professional musician for over 30 years and has travelled all over the world, having performed at a wide variety of venues, including Sydney Opera House, the Grieghalle in Bergen, the Royal Albert Hall and the British High Commission in Kampala, Uganda.


He started his musical career at the age of seven, playing the Cornet in the local village brass band and then went on to study music at the Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. Since then, he has been fortunate enough to have performed with a host of world renowned musicians, such as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Sir Karl Jenkins, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Only Men Aloud, Katherine Jenkins and Trumpet legend, Maurice Murphy.

 

Andrew’s vaied workload that takes in everything from performing educational concerts with the Welsh Brass Trio, playing the Last Post at a military funeral to joining the Regimental Band of The Royal Welsh on the pitch at the Principality Stadium, Cardiff ahead of a Wales rugby international match. He is also the Band’s Recruiter, advising prospective members about joining the Band.

In addition he has appeared with numerous brass bands in concerts and competitions all over the world and has wide experience of working on Television and Radio and also made numerous recordings, including performing on a track on Iwan Rheon’s (“Game of Thrones”) debut album.

Andrew starting conducting whilst studying at the Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff and since then has amassed over 35 years’ experience conducting brass and wind bands throughout the UK, including Tredegar, Tongwynlais, Cwmaman and Markham, to name but a few. From 2001-2010, Andrew was the Musical Director of the hugely successful Greater Gwent Youth Brass Band, having conducted them on tours to the USA, New Zealand, Australia and Poland and at venues such as Symphony Hall, Birmingham and the Royal Festival Hall, London.

 

Andrew has also been very fortunate to have conducted some very fine soloists during his career including Maurice Murphy, Tony Fisher, Russell Gray and David Childs.
 

In 2018 was invited to become the Director of Music for the newly-formed Royal British Legion Band of Wales and during his tenure has seen the Band grow to be a very successful music ensemble. In addition to many memorable concert performances, one of the highlights for Andrew was leading the Band at the Principality Stadium, Cardiff where they accompanied the massed choirs and performed the national anthems for the Wales v South Africa Rugby International in 2023.

Among the many people that Andrew has been fortunate enough to work with; he counts Philip Harper and Nigel Seaman as his main conducting influences and is a great admirer of Howard Snell and David King.
